Ways to Combat Reflux and Get Rid of Heartburn

Reflux is a condition in which stomach acid and other stomach contents flow back into the esophagus. Heartburn, on the other hand, is a burning sensation in the chest, throat, or upper abdomen. It is caused by stomach acid backing up into the esophagus and can be triggered by eating certain foods, such as chocolate, fried foods, and citrus fruits. The terms reflux and heartburn are often used interchangeably.

What are the symptoms of acid reflux disease?

Symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can vary from person to person and may include heartburn, chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and a cough. Typical symptoms of this disease include heartburn, the sensation of stomach contents regurgitating into the esophagus, empty belching, and a sour or salty taste in the mouth. Atypical symptoms include: hoarseness, bad breath, a feeling of fullness, shortness of breath, bloating, a dry cough, and nausea. Regarding particularly alarming symptoms, these include: swallowing disorders, weight loss, painful swallowing, or even bleeding. Alarming symptoms usually result in an absolute indication for gastroscopy, due to the possibility of esophageal cancer and post-inflammatory esophageal stricture.

Causes of heartburn and reflux.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease is caused by stomach acid entering the esophagus. Heartburn often occurs in pregnant women. Acid can appear as a result of many factors, and is most commonly caused by:

  • Excessive alcohol consumption and smoking cigarettes,
  • Taking certain medications,
  • Consuming fatty, hard-to-digest, and very large meals,
  • Consuming carbonated beverages and those containing large amounts of caffeine,
  • Products that cause the esophageal sphincter to relax (e.g., chocolate, citrus, onions),
  • Eating in a hurry.

Home remedies for treating heartburn and reflux?

Let's start by saying that the treatment of heartburn should begin with a consultation with a primary care physician, and if the prescribed medications do not help, we should see a gastroenterologist. Home remedies for heartburn and reflux are usually recommended by doctors. One of the main home remedies for heartburn is drinking herbal infusions and an infusion of fresh ginger root. Flaxseed, steeped in boiling water, is also a highly recommended method for heartburn. Such an infusion helps protect our body from the effects of harmful stomach acids. Another method is drinking a glass of water with a tablespoon of baking soda dissolved in it, though it should not be used too often. The next method is drinking warm milk, as it lowers the acidity of the stomach contents. However, when it comes to heartburn that occurs during pregnancy, almonds are a good option; just a handful is enough to prevent burning in the chest. Some of these remedies also include eating smaller portions, avoiding spicy foods, drinking water, and not lying down after a meal.
