May weekends and rising temperatures encourage residents of Poznań to engage in active outdoor recreation. Unfortunately, along with the start of the recreational season, our clinic observes an increased number of patients presenting with tick bites. Although these small arachnids are mainly associated with dense forests, they are actually common in urban parks and home gardens. Knowledge of how to act after a bite is crucial for protection against Lyme disease and Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE).
First Aid: How to Safely Remove a Tick?
If you notice a tick embedded in your skin during your evening check after a walk, time and removal technique are of the essence. The shorter the parasite feeds, the lower the risk of transmitting dangerous microorganisms.
Step-by-step instructions:
- Use the right tool: Cosmetic tweezers, lassos, or special pumps/tick removers available in pharmacies work best.
- Grip precisely: Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible (by the head/mouthparts, not the abdomen).
- Pull with a firm motion: Pull steadily along the axis of penetration. Avoid twisting motions, which can cause the head to break off.
- Disinfect the area: After removal, wash the wound and your hands with alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or soap and water.
What absolutely not to do? Many patients repeat harmful myths. Never coat the tick with fat (butter), nail polish, or alcohol before removing it. This cuts off the air supply, forcing the tick to vomit directly into your bloodstream, drastically increasing the risk of infection.
When to See a Doctor After a Tick Bite?
Most tick bites do not require immediate medical intervention as long as the parasite was removed in its entirety. However, there are situations where a visit to the family doctor's office is essential:
- Difficulty with removal: If the tick's head remains in the skin and you cannot remove it yourself.
- Erythema migrans: The appearance of a red spot that expands and often (though not always) has a lighter center ("bullseye"). Note: the rash can appear up to 30 days after the bite.
- Flu-like symptoms: Sudden fever, severe headaches, muscle and joint pain occurring after contact with a tick.
- Atypical changes: Swelling, severe redness, or purulent discharge at the bite site.
Risk Map in Poznań and Surroundings
As family doctors in Poznań, we analyze cases reported by our patients. While ticks are present everywhere, particular vigilance should be maintained when visiting popular recreation spots:
- Forests and lakes: The area around Lake Rusałka, Strzeszynek, and the territories of the Wielkopolski National Park (Puszczykowo, Mosina).
- Urban parks: Cytadela, Park Sołacki, and green areas along the Warta riverbed.
- Allotment gardens: Popular RODs (family allotment gardens) in Jeżyce and Grunwald are also tick habitats, as they are carried by small rodents and birds.
How to Protect Yourself and Your Family During May Holidays?
Prevention is the most effective method of fighting tick-borne diseases. Remember a few rules:
- Proper clothing: When going for a walk, opt for long pants and closed footwear. It is easier to spot a wandering tick on light-colored clothing before it bites into the skin.
- Repellents: Use products containing DEET, icaridin, or IR3535 according to the instructions on the package.
- Thorough inspection: After returning home, carefully inspect the entire body, especially places where the skin is thin: behind the knees, in the groin, behind the ears, and at the hairline.
- Vaccinations: We remind you of the possibility of getting vaccinated against Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE). This is the only effective protection against this dangerous viral disease, for which there is no causal treatment.
If you have any doubts regarding tick removal or have noticed worrying skin changes, we invite you to contact our clinic in Poznań. Early diagnosis is the key to full health.
