In response to a sudden temperature change, the blood vessels in the mucous membranes of the nose and throat constrict rapidly, causing ischemia of the mucosa. Additionally, dry air dries out the natural protective mucus that normally traps and neutralizes microbes. As a result, the natural immune barrier of the upper respiratory tract is weakened, opening a virtual "gateway" for viruses and bacteria.

Ordinary irritation or bacterial tonsillitis? How to tell the symptoms apart?

Not every sore throat after traveling in an air-conditioned car means you need to take an antibiotic. It is worth knowing how to differentiate the symptoms:

  • Mild to moderate pain and scratching in the throat;
  • Feeling of dryness in the mouth and esophagus;
  • Serous (watery) runny nose or stuffy nose;
  • Low-grade fever (up to 38°C);
  • General feeling of malaise.

2. Bacterial tonsillitis (strep throat/acute tonsillitis):

  • Very severe, sudden sore throat, making it difficult to swallow even saliva;
  • High fever (often above 38.5°C) with chills;
  • Enlarged, very red tonsils, often with visible white or yellowish purulent coating;
  • Enlarged and painful cervical lymph nodes;
  • Usually no runny nose or cough.

Rules for safe air conditioning use

To avoid throat infections during the summer season, just follow a few simple rules:

  • Apply the safe temperature difference rule: The difference between the outside temperature and the temperature in the air-conditioned room or car should not exceed 5-7°C.
  • Avoid direct airflow: Never direct the stream of cool air directly at your face, neck, or chest.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink still water regularly to moisturize the throat mucosa from the inside.
  • Ventilate rooms and maintain filters: Regular cleaning and disinfection of the air conditioning prevents the spread of fungi and mold.
  • Turn off the cooling before getting out of the car: A few minutes before reaching your destination, turn off the air conditioning and allow your body to gradually get used to the higher temperature.
